Benchline UK: civil tech website and design system for British infrastructure software

Benchline UK is the British edition of our fictional civil tech brand, headquartered in Bristol with projects across all four nations. It shares every template with the US edition but reads as a British firm: pounds ex. VAT, kilometres and tonnes, National Highways and Transport Scotland, UK GDPR and the laws of England and Wales, and a palette of forest ink, concrete paper and survey-marker red.

Project facts

  • Client: Benchline Ltd, registered in England & Wales (fictional)
  • Sector: Civil engineering, heavy civil construction and geospatial software
  • Markets: Bristol headquarters plus projects across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Services: Market localisation · Copywriting · Brand adaptation · Civic tech website design · Accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA) · SEO foundations
  • Templates: 8 page templates shared with every Benchline edition
  • Stack: Hand-built HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript; one strings file and one theme file per market

The brief

A British civil tech site that never reads as American

The biggest risk for a UK edition is inheriting the US one: dollars, state DOTs, OSHA and ZIP codes. Benchline UK keeps the design system and templates but replaces every place, price, institution and legal reference with a British one. Buyers search by postcode and book a demo rather than schedule one, prices are quoted in pounds ex. VAT, and the legal copy follows UK GDPR and the laws of England and Wales.

Benchline UK: The brief

Designing for United Kingdom

Brand adaptation

The same Benchline, with a local accent

The palette comes from the British jobsite rather than the flag: deep forest ink for text and dark panels, warm concrete paper for the page, stone and sage for secondary surfaces, and a measured survey-marker red for action and emphasis. Instrument Sans gives headlines a crafted, editorial tone; Inter keeps body copy, forms and data plain. The wordmark keeps the survey crosshair and benchmark triangle, unchanged from the US edition.

Homepage and key journeys

The homepage opens on a full-bleed hero over British infrastructure with the line The ground truth for British infrastructure. Proof points are restated for the UK (4 nations with active projects, national road and rail bodies using Span, tonnes of embodied carbon avoided), and the stories carousel covers the M4 Corridor, Wye Valley, Severn Beach Line and Tamar Bridge Crossing. The distinctive flow is the region selector: navigation, footer, contact details and legal copy sit in a single per-market configuration file, so switching from UK to another market swaps every place, price and institution without leaving the shared design system.

Compliance, accessibility and trust

  • Privacy notice under UK GDPR naming Benchline Ltd (registered in England & Wales) as controller, with opt-in cookie consent where Reject all is as prominent as Accept all.
  • Software support and maintenance terms governed by the laws of England and Wales, with fees payable annually in pounds sterling and UK GDPR-ready hosting on Enterprise plans.
  • Footer with a British company line, registered office and VAT number; no US state privacy rights or US regulators.
  • Passes automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks on every page at 360, 390, 768 and 1440 px: no contrast failures, no unreachable controls, no horizontal scrolling.
  • A language switcher built from hreflang sits in the header on desktop and in the footer on phones.

One system, twelve markets

Every visible string lives in one file per market, and every colour and typeface in one theme file. This edition needed no new templates or components: a strings file, a theme, regional photography and local legal content made it a different brand experience. For a civic-tech company with international plans, a new market becomes a content project rather than a rebuild.

Deliverables

  • Market profile: language, formats, legal and seasonality
  • Full localised copy across 8 templates, header, footer and forms
  • Brand adaptation: palette, type pairing and logo descriptor
  • 37 regional photographs (Pexels, credited in credits.json)
  • Local legal content
  • Accessibility pass (WCAG 2.2 AA, automated) and QA at four screen widths
  • Portfolio media: stills, full-page captures, scroll video, OG image, brand board

FAQ

How is a British civil tech website different from a US one?

Prices are in pounds ex. VAT, distances in kilometres and tonnes, postcodes replace ZIP codes, and legal copy follows UK GDPR and the laws of England and Wales rather than US state law. Institutions become National Highways, Transport Scotland and Transport for London.

Can one website design serve the UK and the US?

Yes. Benchline shares templates across editions; the UK edition inherits the design system and overrides every place, price, institution and legal reference that is genuinely British.
