Lantern Early Years: education website design for a Bristol-led nursery network

Lantern Early Years is the UK edition of our fictional Nordic-inspired nursery group, with 14 campuses across six regions from Bristol to Edinburgh. It shares every template with the US edition, but reads as a British nursery: pounds including VAT, Ofsted and the EYFS, the 2026–27 school year, and a palette of oat, clay, ochre, moss and spruce taken from forest floors and rain boots.

Project facts

The brief

A British nursery site that never reads as American

The biggest risk for a UK edition is inheriting the US one: dollars, preschool, zip codes, the American school year. Lantern UK keeps the same tested templates but replaces every place, price, regulator and habit with a British one. Parents search by town and postcode, tuition is quoted per month in pounds including VAT, and the legal copy names the ICO, the EYFS and Ofsted. The result is a site that feels like a Bristol nursery, not a translated American one.

Brand adaptation

The same Lantern Early Years, with a local accent

Spruce carries the interface; clay and ochre bring warmth in light sections, and a lighter sage takes over on dark panels so every pairing passes WCAG AA. Newsreader gives headlines a bookish, editorial tone; Instrument Sans keeps forms and navigation plain. The wordmark keeps the Early Learning descriptor. The palette is drawn from forest floors and rain boots rather than flags or primary colours.

Homepage and key journeys

The hero opens on Nordic outdoor play photography with A gentler, braver kind of early learning. Proof points are restated for the UK (14 nurseries in six regions, qualified teachers with ongoing Nordic training, 3,800+ children). The homepage is an editorial long scroll: the philosophy in six pillars, programmes by age from Seedlings to Pathfinders Reception, family testimonials from Clifton, Chorlton, Edinburgh and Leeds, a photo mosaic of muddy knees and bright minds, nearby campuses and the latest journal articles. The most distinctive flow is the four-step online application (Child → Parents → Programme → Confirm) with a refundable £60 registration fee requested after the setting director confirms availability.

Compliance, accessibility and trust

  • Privacy notice under the UK GDPR naming Lantern Early Years Ltd (registered in England & Wales) as controller, with the route to the Information Commissioner's Office.
  • Cookie policy with opt-in consent and a Reject all button as prominent as Accept all.
  • Footer with a UK company line, registered office and VAT number; no US regulators or schemes.
  • Accessibility statement and terms covering the EYFS and Ofsted context.
  • Passes automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks on every page at 360, 390, 768 and 1440 px: no contrast failures, no unreachable controls, no horizontal scrolling.
  • A language switcher built from hreflang sits in the header on desktop and in the footer on phones.

One system, twelve markets

Every visible string lives in one file per market, and every colour and typeface in one theme file. This edition needed no new templates or components: a strings file, a theme, regional photography and local legal content made it a different brand experience. For an early-learning provider with international plans, a new market becomes a content project rather than a rebuild.

Deliverables

  • Market profile: language, formats, legal and seasonality
  • Full localised copy across 15 templates, header, footer and forms
  • Brand adaptation: palette, type pairing and logo descriptor
  • 22 regional photographs (Pexels, credited in credits.json)
  • Local legal content
  • Accessibility pass (WCAG 2.2 AA, automated) and QA at four screen widths
  • Portfolio media: stills, full-page captures, scroll video, OG image, brand board

FAQ

How is a UK nursery website different from a US preschool one?

Prices are in pounds including VAT; preschool becomes nursery and kindergarten becomes reception; postcodes replace ZIP codes; legal copy follows the UK GDPR, the ICO, the EYFS and Ofsted rather than US law.

Can one website design serve the UK and the US?

Yes. Lantern shares templates across editions; the UK edition inherits British spelling and overrides everything that is genuinely British, from the school year to the admissions line.

Do you offer education website development as well as design?

Yes. We design and build. For Lantern we hand-coded a lightweight static site with a dependency-free generator; the whole site including photography weighs 3.6 MB and all JavaScript is about 3 KB.
