Banksia Health Australia: healthcare referral platform design for Australian providers
Banksia Health is a fictional healthcare technology company whose product automates referral intake, eligibility checks and routing.

Banksia Health is a fictional healthcare technology company whose product automates referral intake, eligibility checks and routing. This Australian edition localises the US case study for the Australian market: Medicare and private health funds, GP eReferrals and secure messaging, state equipment schemes and the NDIS, the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, and a sun-bleached palette that feels local without cliché.

The brief
Australian healthcare language, not American with sunshine
Australia shares the English language but not the healthcare vocabulary: GP not primary care physician, eReferral not electronic referral, prior approval not prior authorization, health fund not insurer, Medicare not Medicaid, PBS authority not prior authorization, and out-of-pocket costs explained plainly. The site also reflects local funding flows: Medicare rebates, private health fund cover, state equipment schemes and the NDIS, and GP referrals sent by secure messaging.

Brand adaptation
The same Banksia Health, with a local accent
The Australian edition keeps the Banksia brand structure but shifts the palette to a sun-bleached, outdoorsy feel: a high-key off-white background, ocean blue as the primary interface colour, and ochre for accents and italics. Dark sections use a deep green-teal. Corner radii are larger, softening the system. The typefaces remain Plus Jakarta Sans for headings and Inter for body, matching the US edition.

Homepage, product and solutions
The homepage leads with a hero that shows a queue of incoming referrals from secure messages, eReferrals and fax, with status labels such as Checking cover and Routed to Melbourne team. The main flow is the referral intake story: from any source (secure messaging, email, fax) to automatic extraction of patient, Medicare and health fund fields, cover and prior approval checks, routing, and proactive updates to patients and referrers. A product tabs section walks through Intake, Cover and prior approval, Routing, Outreach and Analytics. Customer stories from Australian providers (Parramatta, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Gold Coast, Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Geelong, Townsville, Wollongong, Bendigo, Darwin, Fremantle, Cairns, Sunshine Coast) provide local proof.

Compliance, accessibility and trust
- Privacy policy under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, with the OAIC complaint route and Spam Act consent for marketing.
- Demo disclaimer: do not enter patient health information; the site is a concept and does not give medical advice.
- Footer: Pty Ltd, sample ABN, Acknowledgement of Country, and emergency and healthdirect numbers.
- Passes automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks on every page at 360, 390, 768 and 1440 px: no contrast failures, no unreachable controls, no horizontal scrolling.
- A language switcher built from
hreflangsits in the header on desktop and in the footer on phones.
One system, twelve markets
Every visible string lives in one region pack per market (copy, data and alt text), and every colour and typeface in one theme file. This edition needed no new templates or components: a region pack, a theme, local data and legal content made it a different brand experience. For a health-tech company with international plans, a new market becomes a content project rather than a rebuild.

FAQ
What makes an Australian healthcare referral website different?
Australian terminology (GP, eReferral, prior approval, health fund, Medicare, PBS), local funding flows (Medicare, private health funds, state schemes, NDIS), secure messaging, and Privacy Act compliance.
Can one design system cover Australia and the US?
Yes: the Australian edition inherits the US structure and overrides vocabulary, funding details, legal text and visual theme.
