Magpie Australia: fintech website design for a Sydney-led platform
Magpie is a business-banking platform for Australian founders who would rather be building.

Magpie is a business-banking platform for Australian founders who would rather be building. As its fintech UI UX design agency, we created the brand identity, a 10-template marketing website and the design system behind them, making startup banking feel calm, premium and fast. The Australian edition speaks the local language: transaction accounts, BSBs and PayID, A$ pricing with GST, the Financial Claims Scheme, and a sun-bleached look that feels at home in Sydney or Melbourne.

The brief
Australian banking language, not American with sunshine
Australia shares English with the US, but its banking vocabulary is its own: transaction account not checking account, BSB not routing number, PayID and BECS not ACH, Tax File Number and ABN not SSN and EIN, superannuation not 401(k), and private health insurance not health insurance. Prices are in A$ including GST, dates run day-month-year, and the regulator is ASIC with the ATO for tax. The design shifts too: a high-key, sun-bleached palette and rounder corners replace the dark spruce and brass.

Designing for Australia

Brand adaptation
The same Magpie, with a local accent
The Australian edition swaps the private-bank mood for something lighter and more outdoorsy. Ocean blue (#2e6f8e) carries the interface, sand and mist soften the backgrounds, and brass (#8b5b28) marks emphasis. General Sans and DM Sans (both free from Fontshare and Google Fonts) feel contemporary and relaxed, and larger corner radii (10px, 18px, 28px) make the system friendlier. The descriptor stays Business banking, as Australian startups expect.

Homepage and key journeys
A sunlit Sydney Opera House image leads into One quiet place for every dollar you move, with a live balance card showing A$2,481,906.42 and recent transactions in AUD. The page flows through product sections for transaction accounts, corporate cards, treasury and payments, a security section with A$5M sweep coverage, and a stats band. The most distinctive flow is the startup runway calculator, which updates live in A$ and shows months of runway, net monthly burn and the date cash runs out, with plain-English advice.

Compliance, accessibility and trust
- Privacy policy under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, with the OAIC complaint route and Spam Act 2003 consent for marketing.
- Financial services disclaimer: Magpie is a fictional financial technology company; banking services are provided by partner banks covered by the Financial Claims Scheme (FCS).
- Footer: Magpie Financial Technologies Pty Ltd, demo ABN, Sydney and Melbourne, and an Acknowledgement of Country.
- Passes automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks on every page at 360, 390, 768 and 1440 px: no contrast failures, no unreachable controls, no horizontal scrolling.
- A language switcher built from
hreflangsits in the header on desktop and in the footer on phones.
One system, twelve markets
Every visible string lives in one file per market, and every colour and typeface in one theme file. This edition needed no new templates or components: a strings file, a theme, regional photography and local legal content made it a different brand experience. For a fintech company with international plans, a new market becomes a content project rather than a rebuild.
